Reel King Megaways Review

It was just a question of time before someone gave this classic slot series a serious injection of Megaways steroids. Reel King is a long-time UK favorite in the brick and mortar scene, but Green Tube and Red Tiger have already guaranteed the series “eternal life” with their online versions. Inspired Gaming was the first developer that felt “inspired” to go the megaways route with this legendary game however, and we have a feeling that fans will not be disappointed.

You need to prepare yourself at once for a much bumpier ride with this one however, as the low volatility and measly payouts are long gone. With wins up to 12,500x your stake possible, you will have to endure plenty of dead spins and minor wins in the base game. The bonus features are somewhat intricate and interlaced, but they certainly honor the classic Reel King mini slot feature that so many players love. It’s too much to cover here in the intro part of the review, but we reveal all the juicy details below.

Reel King Megaways still has a classic look and feel to it, and it will get the nostalgic vibes going for sure. The game plays out on 6 reels, 2 to 7 rows (with an extra horizontal top reel) and up to 117,649 ways to win. You can place bets between 20p and £20 per spin across all platforms and devices here, and the cascading wins feature is key to triggering 1 of 3 Reel King features, which might lead you all the way to the bonus round with a bit of luck.

What are the bonus features?

The bonus features in Reel King Megaways can seem kind of complicated at first, but we’ll explain them as clearly as possible for you here. We promise you, it’s not all that hard to follow what’s going on once you get started, but it certainly helps to have read about the features up front.

As is often the case with Megaways engine games, there is a cascading wins feature in play in the base game. However, this feature does a lot more than give you additional winning chances on winning spins here. It’s tied directly to the Reel King feature, which is the most special and somewhat complicated feature in this game.

On the left-hand side, you’ll see a bonus meter with 5 bars before you hit The Reel King sign, and above that the Super King and the Mega King sign. On every base game spin a random number of reels between 0 and 6 will be highlighted with a yellow/golden color.

The same number of bars will be highlighted on the Reel King meter on the left.

You need to highlight at least 6 reels to trigger the Reel King feature, and this can happen on a single spin or via the cascading wins feature. If you start with 3 highlighted reels, you need 3 cascading wins to get to the first Reel King level, and the feature starts over again on every new spin. This means that you need 1 or 2 extra cascading wins after you’ve reached the Reel King level in order to trigger the Super or Mega King version of the feature.

The Reel King character will now show up with his 3-reel mini slot on between 1 and 6 of the reels (depending on which feature you triggered). The mini slots have only 1 payline, and come with red, blue or yellow lucky number 7s. You can also land blanks however, and you win by landing any color combo of 7s. The highest paying combo is 3 red 7s, which pays out 10x your stake.

The highlighted reels feature is active on these cute little mini slots also, and you’ll see a free spins trail above the reels. You need to land 3 lit reels on a mini slot to advance along the trail, and there are 4 bars you need to light up before you even start with the lowest possible number of free spins on the trail.

Free spins in Reel King Megaways

The free spins trail mentioned above will vary according to which of the 3 Reel King features you triggered in the base game. Also the number of actual Reel King mini slots will vary according to this, and it works as follows:

  • Reel King - 1-2 Reel Kings mini slots and between 8 and 15 free spins on the trail.
  • Super King - 2-3 Reel Kings mini slots and between 8 and 20 free spins on the trail.
  • Mega King - 3-6 Reel Kings mini slots and between 8 and 25 free spins on the trail.

The bonus round comes with an unlimited progressive multiplier that starts at 1x and increases by +1 for every cascading win.

Now the reels will be highlighted with a red color instead of yellow, and if you get 6 lit reels you’ll be granted the possibility of up to 3 extra free spins and an increase of the multiplier with up to +3.

How to play

The game interface is somewhat simpler than the actual gameplay here, and Inspired Gaming has put all the buttons on the right-hand side of the reels. We will walk you through all there is to know about how to play Reel King Megaways slot here, but it might not be necessary for experienced players to read this too carefully. Skim through it if you wonder about something, or skip to the next part of the review if you feel like it.

All you need to know is contained in the gear button below the spin button, as this opens up 6 different options for you. You can toggle on/off the game sound, and you can turn on the turbo spin feature in there. You can also opt for left-hand play if you want, and check out your game history after you’ve played for a while.

Clicking the “game info” button opens up the paytable, and the very first screen has all the respective symbol combination values on display. The highest value symbol is the bag of gold coins, and this one pays 50x for 6 on a payline.

There is also a jester wild symbol that can land on the horizontal extra reel both in the base game and during the bonus round.

This horizontal reel adds an extra row to reel 2 to 5, and you need to land matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left to right to win. The cascades make sure that winning symbols are removed, and new symbols drop down to take their place. This goes on as long as you keep landing new winners, and it also furthers you along the “lit reels trail” towards the Reel King feature.

Finally, you can set your bet level via the coin stack icon between 20p and £20 per spin. Holding down the spin button opens up the Autoplay feature, and you can set up between 5 and 100 autospins. You can also set a customizable loss or win limit here, and there is a Spin Chance feature which gives you an extra chance to win when your credit goes below the current spin price.

We’re sure more casinos will take this one into their fold pretty soon, but you can still play the game in a few places already.

The 200 Spins Reel King Megaways Experience

People with a strong relationship to the land-based classic might be even more eager than us to take the megaways version for a spin. We have to admit that we only got introduced to this legendary series recently, via Red Tiger’s Reel King Mega (more on that below). Still, any new megaways engine game always gets us itchy in the ole’ spin finger, and we’ll share our 200 spins experience with you here.

On our unofficial scale of “oddly satisfying” gameplay (1 = stomach ache and 10 = almost indifferent to wins or losses) we would say Reel King Megaways is a solid 7 with the turbo switched on. Each spin is accompanied by a classic fruit machine tune, and we also like how the winning symbols pop when they disappear. The lit reels feature with the “dings” for each cascade is also somewhat neat, but we got plenty of dead spins in our session for sure.

Many times we landed 3 to 4 lit reels on a spin, only to not get a single win from it. Just as often we would land 0 initially lit reels, and then win a smaller amount that went nowhere. This is to be expected from a highly volatile game, of course, but we still think it’s important to report our experience of it. High volatility can sometimes mean different things in different slots, and here it means that bigger wins most likely will come from the bonus round.

It took as a good while to finally hit the magic number of lit reels, but when we did, we started out with a win of 5.3x our stake. We triggered only the Reel King feature, and not the 2 more attractive ones above, but hey, you have to take what you can get right. At least we got to see what this feature is all about.

We got only 1 Reel King mini slot on the reels to help us out, which seemed like a bad omen. We landed some okay payouts from the different 7s, but progressing towards the 8 free spins was not all that easy. In the end we won 7x our stake from the Reel King feature, and we only got 3 bars into the free spins trail.

This took us to the gamble feature, where we decided to gamble our £140 win to see if we could get 6 free spins. The wheel of fortune spun with 4 big red segments, and 4 smaller green ones. We landed the marker on a red segment, and was taken back to the base game with our tail between our legs. Hopefully, you will have more luck with your first 200 spins on this game.

Review Summary

Giving this classic and somewhat legendary game the megaways treatment is probably the best shot the series has for going mainstream online. The boosted 12,500x potential, up to 117,649 ways to win and the somewhat elaborately intertwined bonus features paying homage to the original game should be enough to win many players over. Not least those who are already fans of the brick and mortar series that has been particularly popular in the UK. The volatility is no joke here though, and you need to be mentally prepared for a bumpy ride.

Pros

  • 3 different Reel King features
  • Free spins with unlimited progressive multiplier
  • High volatility and 12,500x max win potential

Cons

  • Max bet is only £20

Well, obviously you should try the online versions of the original game from Greentube, and why not also the Red Tiger version while you’re at it. We’ll briefly describe 3 hand selected recommendations for you below, and you can follow the links to find out more and try the free demo game for each one.

Reel King Mega - is very different from the game at hand when it comes to the math model, but you will benefit from 2x2 Super Symbols on this classic fruit machine looking game. It’s all about turning the reels yellow/golden here also, and this is how you trigger the Reel King bonus round where wins up to 500x is possible.

Reel King Potty - is one of the classic versions of this game, and it comes with both a regular Reel King bonus round and a Reel King potty feature. The first one is triggered by 5 yellow reels, while the ladder comes about when you get 5 red reels and allows you to win 1 of 4 jackpots.

Reel King Free Spin Frenzy - is yet another Reel King version from Green Tube, and it comes with a special Free Spins Frenzy bonus round. You will get 10 free spins when you land 3 scatters, and Reel King symbols landing fully in view during the feature trigger the Reel King mini slot spins.
